Rene Russo grew up in Burbank. Her parents are Nino Russo and Shirley Balocca. Shirley is employed as a barmaid. Her father a sculptor and mechanic left the family when Rene was two years old and her mother tended Rene and her younger sister Toni in a home with a single mother. Her father is Italian heritage, and her mother has German-English Irish and Italian roots. Rene was diagnosed with scoliosis when she was in junior high and was forced to wear a full-torso brace. Jolly Green Giant, her classmates' nickname, came from her because of her tall height. Her brace was removed when she entered Burroughs High School with Ron Howard, but even afterwards, her persona remained somewhat solitary. Rene was forced to get out of high school as she entered the 10th grade. In the following 18 months, she worked a variety of part-time opportunities for earning cash. She worked in a theater as a hostess, where the movies were all free. She then became an owner of a restaurant and was able to get the food she needed for free. Then she was employed at Disneyland as a cashier in the Disneyland shop as a cashier. She would often work multiple jobs at the at the same time. Her last position she was able to do to make money was in a full-time eyeglass factory, which was responsible for inspecting contacts lenses.
